Clinical Service Delivery
The Canadian Concussion Institute will provide in depth clinical services that include clinical assessment, objective testing and recommendations for treatment and rehabilitation. The assessments will be open to patients with concussion sustained in any circumstance. There will be options for levels of testing and feedback depending on the circumstances and needs of the patient. Following the assessment, a detailed report will be provided explaining the clinical findings correlated with the objective testing methodologies. The report will combine the results of the whole assessment to formulate conclusions regarding the diagnosis and management.
Education
The Canadian Concussion Institute will use evidence-based data to provide educational sessions that target health professionals, sport associations and regulatory bodies, employment stakeholders and the public. The educational sessions will raise awareness of concussions, provide information around diagnosis and objective testing, and recommendations for management and rehabilitation.
Research
The Canadian Concussion Institute will collaborate with experienced researchers in the field to spearhead state of the art research, involving objective measures of brain injury, changes in physiology related to brain injury and psychometric measures. The research projects will involve all areas covered by the institute, including: clinical care, education, communication and policies defining standards of care. Clinical care research will result in standardized methods of care based on objective measures of brain injury linked with psychometric measures. Educational research will explore the impact of education on clinical outcome measures, knowledge translation from research, and quality of educational tools. In the area of policy definition and change, the impact of these changes on clinical outcome measures will be examined. Quality assurance measures will be used to assess communication based on feedback and outcomes.
Strategic Communication
The Canadian Concussion Institute will employ a number of strategies to communicate with relevant stakeholders. At the level of clinical service delivery, this will involve a detailed report that refers to the relevant literature data and standards of care. These reports will be available for dissemination by the individual to health care professionals involved in their care, workers compensation, and sports coaches. Educational communication strategies will be written, face to face and on-line. Based on current and ongoing research, recommendations for policy and standards of care will be communicated with government, funding agencies, sport associations and the public.
